Meaning

A concessive clause is a clause which begins with "although" or "even though" and which expresses an idea that suggests the opposite of the main part of the sentence.

Function

1.   To connect two different ideas.
2.   To ensure, encourage, raise spirits and express unexpected results of something.
3.   Has the same meaning as but, but can be used at the beginning of sentences.
4.   Even though is the strongest conjunction.

Examples

Ø Although the government undertakes activities to save the forests from fire, they can’t stop forest fires easily.
Ø Even though there are many steps taken to influence people to use public transportation, people won’t exchange their cars for public transportation easily.


Pattern

Although

                                                 clause 1 + although + clause 2 

subject + (will/can/must/etc) + predicate + (object/complement) + although + subject + (will, can, etc.) predicate + (object/complement)

Example:
I will plead with governments to address climate change and to fight for the survival of polar bear although you disagree.

Even though


                                                Even though + clause 1, clause 2

Even though + subject + predicate + (object/complement), subject + (will/can/must/etc.) + predicate + (object/complement)

Example:

Even though many species are endangered because of habitat loss and degradation, we can do something to protect them.
